Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, and sorry I could not travel both and be one traveler, long I stood and looked down one as far as I could to where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair, ...... I shall be telling this with a sigh somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I -- I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference. - Robert Frost

I used to think I liked Lanvin Arpège pour Homme even better than Dior Homme because it seemed drier to my nose. I think that impression comes from the patchouli in the base of Arpège pH. It seems to make a big difference in the overall feel of the scent. Now, I'm beginning to think that I like them both, but in different ways. the Lanvin does strike me as a bit drier and perhaps more stereotypically masculine than the Dior. But the remarkable thing about both of these is that they brought iris (orris root) back out of exile from men's perfumery; they set the clock back to 16th century Tuscany and made iris a men's note again. That wasn't easy. Others had been trying, mostly niche houses and "edgy" noses. These two were the ones that broke through to the larger market.

Not sure what to make of this one yet. Smells of the faintest mint and labdanum absolute (which is close to ambergris.) I initially just applied a tiny dab and could smell almost nothing. I just applied quite a bit more and am getting a whisper of the above mentioned notes (well, labdanum absolute is a whisper in itself, more "felt than seen" to steal from the ad copy.) I'm hoping for some kind of mood lifting effect. We'll see.

Happy anniversary to Tigs!
SoTD for me is Givenchy III, a Turin/Sanchez 5-star that I recently bought blind after the triple whammy of a conversation with Dimitri, reading the Guide description, and finding it for cheap on Parfum1.com.
I'm finding this a lovely, light, clear-and-yet-deep chypre that unexpectedly manages to pull off the peach note successfully for me. I feel like I'm starting to be able to identify at least some of what constitutes a "great" scent for the Turin/Sanchez team (not completely to my personal taste, but... ), and am very much enjoying this one. Reminds me (in my mind, I'll need to go back and actually sniff it), of a softer and more rounded younger sister to Replique. I definitely see myself wearing this one on a fairly regular basis.
Notes: Bergamot, jasmine, carnation, lily of the valley, patchouli and peach.
It’s thought that people who hope too much will just waste their life away and never get down to doing any real work. They’re confusing Hope with Wish, its lazy cousin... When Wish whispers, “Something is just around the corner,” what comes or not is never what was wished for. When Hope whispers “Something is just around the corner,” something always is. -- Charlie Elberson
